To my delight and determination, the wolf’s paw prints appeared clearly in the mud and snow that morning.

Emboldened and well-rested, Keo and I made our way further North toward the Shattered Wastes.

I crouched, bracing myself for the ice beneath to give way. But the sound didn’t come from beneath my feet.

“You! You’ll pay for killing my Meeka!” a shrill voice came from behind us.

I turned on my heel and saw before me a wretched stooped creature, a gnarled old woman clothed in a dingy black robe and cloak with her stringy silver hair falling limply against her shoulders.

“Well?” she said, fixing me with a toothy grin, “Aren’t you pleased to see me?”

And then she launched herself at me, sharp pointed talon-like claws for hands.
