Ivar the Slayer #5

Year 12, Day 13

It took several days’ hiking back through the Veiled Mountains and down to the Tempest Hills with the child riding on Keo’s back while I navigated with rein in hand, and a watchful eye.

Approaching the Overseer’s tent, the humble encampment of Longstead began to stir.

Rurik the Overseer wept to see the boy again, and they shared a strong embrace before he turned to me.

Later, as we dined in the great hall at the center of Longstead, my uncle and I sat by the Overseer at the head of a long oaken table, and Rurik spoke to me in hushed tones.

“I have another task for you, as you seem keen on fighting back against the darkness that plagues the Ironlands.”

“Two days before you returned,” the Overseer explained, frowning, “a wounded wretch stumbled into our village. He seemed not to know our words, and gibbered some foreign tongue as well.”

“But this much was clear; He had been attacked by an Elder Beast of some sort! The poor man’s arm was torn off at the shoulder, and bite marks the size of your head were left gouged in his breast.”

My brow furrowed. This was definitely concerning.

“Any idea where the Beast is now?” I asked.

“Of course, it’s hard to say for certain,” the Overseer answered.

“But one of the other passers-through recognized his dress and reeded hat as that of a boatman from the rivers of the Havens down South. As far as we know, he may have come all the way from the Flooded Lands along the southern shores of the Ironlands, though.”
