Broga and I made camp once again, toward the end of our third day of travel to the northern edge of the Hinterlands.
The hills turned to moors. The moors turned to scrub. The scrub turned to rocky terrain. And finally, we approached a more densely forested area where we could seek shelter from the worst of the elements.
“I’ll go to find us some game,” announced the ranger after our tents were set up around a small fire.
I nodded my consent and got to work taking care of Keo, when out of the dark mist came a hoarse inhuman cry.
Broga had turned to enter the forest, but looked back over his shoulder at us with a frown, “Was that… a horse?”
I held tight to Keo’s reins as he fidgeted, and I peered into the mist.
In the distance, only a few meters from our campsite, a pale skeletal form condensed itself and trotted into view. Its eyes were white.
“A gaunt,” I whispered.

Before I could even turn to mount Keo and draw my weapon, the ghostly horse came charging at the ranger, who stood there frozen in fear.
