Samuel now curled up in a ball on the jail cell floor, clutching his hand and half-crying / half-laughing dementedly.

“I won’t tell you nothin’, Marshal, and it wouldn’t matter even if I did. Black Hawk’s already got his sights set on you after last night.

He knows everything that goes on in Sagebrush, and you just added your name to his shit list for puttin’ me in here!”

I frowned. I’d already bungled the interrogation, and this was going nowhere fast.

But when I looked over at Sheriff Hayes, he had a satisfied smirk on his lips.

He motioned for me to take a step outside, and I did.

“So now we know where to start looking,” he said, crossing his arms and looking self-assured.

I just started at him confused. “What are you talking about? This buzzard isn’t giving up anything on his boss, not even after all that!”

Sheriff Hayes slowly shook his head as if he found amusement in the words of a simple child. “He just told us Black Hawk knows everything that goes on in Sagebrush, which means–“

I struck my forehead with the palm of my hand, nearly knocking my cowboy hat off my crown.

“Which means he’s here, or near enough that word could reach him overnight,” I finished for him.

The Sheriff nodded sagely and held my gaze. “You’ve got some more interrogating to do, son. And I recommend you start at the Lone Star Saloon.”
