Broga spun from the Gaunt’s strike, landing in a heap at the edge of the forest.

With the animal’s focus seemingly fixed on the ranger, I made my move.

Just before the demon horse made impact, I growled and brandished my sword, closing the distance quickly, and forcefully slashing at its side and hind quarters.

The blade dug a trough of gore into its flesh, causing it to stumble as it nearly trampled Broga.

Broga, for his part, was only slightly injured and shaken. And despite the hit, he too drew a weapon on the Gaunt: a simple dagger from his belt.

Broga slashed at the horse’s forehooves and managed to dismember one of them on the same side as I had injured its hind quarter.

This left the creature deeply wounded and unable to move very far at all.

It pitifully attempted to rear back with a hoarse whinny and fell on to its side, kicking frantically at us.

With the Gaunt now clinging to life, I marched around to its head, clenched my eyes shut, and drove my sword directly into its skull.

Broga simply watched in horror, clenching a bleeding fist around his upraised dagger, as if the creature might rise again out of nowhere and come for him a second time.

In moments, as I helped him to his feet, the magical horse appeared to implode, with flesh disintegrating, leaving only a bare skeleton behind.
