“Please Marshal, I don’t want no trouble,” the barman said in a low growl, but with pleading eyes, as he looked at me from behind the bar.

“You’ve got nothing to worry about, Floyd. I just stopped in to wet my whistle and have a nice chat with a friend.” I kept my gaze fixed squarely on him and feigned a sip of my rye.

“It’s a train heist, Marshal. Tonight at sunset.

I overheard ’em talkin’ about it before you showed up to haul off Samuel. But it ain’t no regular heist!”

Floyd spoke with slightly bulging eyes. A bead of sweat ran down his bald forehead, and I could tell he was beginning to panic.

I stopped my glass mid-sip and frowned, “What do you mean?”

Floyd’s eyes darted around the interior of the saloon and he found himself leaning toward me unconsciously.

“They’re plannin’ to crash the train, overturn it. They’re gonna kill everyone aboard!”

By now, Floyd looked like he could barely contain himself, and I could only keep up the charade of looking casual on my end, so I gritted my teeth and glared at him.

“Floyd, I know this is serious, but I need you to stay calm,” I whispered, with a threatening edge to my voice.

I could tell without looking around me that pairs of eyes and ears were starting to turn in our direction, and any of them could have belonged to Blackhawk’s men.

I slid the near-full rye glass toward Floyd and urged him to take a drink, as well as a deep calming breath.

“Listen, I’ll take care of this. You might wanna lay low and take the rest of the day off.”

At that suggestion, Floyd looked truly relieved. He dabbed at his forehead with one of his cleaning cloths and nodded, gaze settling on the floor, which I assume was spinning from his perspective.

I needed to get back to the Sheriff, and report what I’d found, quick!
