Brogah went ahead, albeit much more slowly than I would have. His fingers grazed the walls of the stone passage we were making our way down, avoiding cobwebs, lichen, and the like.

But just as he passed a wall lantern to our right, he stopped so suddenly that I nearly bumped into him.

“Wait, something’s…,” he whispered with an excited hitch in his throat.

We backtracked slightly, and his fingertips found an abnormality in the lay of the wall’s bricks. Upon pressing harder with the flat of his hand, then both hands, a section of the wall began to shift backward and its edges crumbled, as if the mortar holding it together were weak.

“You clever bastard! What’s this?” I said, an excitement now creeping into my voice as my heartbeat hammered in my chest.

After opening the “door”, we both walked into a small chamber. It was lit through a number of openings which appeared to be looking out into various other chambers of the dungeon.

There were also what appeared to be the personal effects of a former inhabitant: a sleeping bag, a brush, a rusty and discarded lantern.

I squeezed Brogah’s shoulder in congratulation and turned him to face me, “A shortcut! This is fantastic, Brogah!”

But he merely looked at me and raised a finger to his lips with an urgency that indicated I was missing something.

He silently turned his gaze to one of the openings in the wall, and as we both peered through, we saw the silhouette of a massive creature covered in spikes and dripping in blood.
