Shane’s Law #11

A cold splash of water to the face woke me quickly.

I sat up on a low cot in the town doctor’s office, sputtering and wiping the moisture from my face, when I heard Sheriff Hayes’ voice above me.

“There he is! Welcome back to the land of the living, Marshal.”

When I opened my eyes, I saw not only the concerned face of the Sheriff, but the doctor, and one of the deputies lying on his own cot off to the side.

“Blackhawk?” I asked, cutting to the heart of the matter.

The Sheriff’s arms were folded and he simply shook his head.

Dammit, I thought. How close we had been to bringing him in!

“Not for nothing, Shane, but we got word that the train reached its destination safely, and the Sheriff says without your help at the last minute, those explosives would have gone off.”

Doctor Clark crouched down and, with a steady grip, helped me to my feet.

Sheriff Hayes spoke up again, “And the Doc says you’re lucky to be with us. That bullet pierced straight through your shoulder, but missed any vital bloodletting spots.

If you think you’re up for it, the trail is still warm on our friend Blackhawk. He can’t have got far after his own injuries and no medical attention.”

“Yes,” I said directly, testing the flexibility of my arm and shoulder socket. I could still draw my pistol, and I had a bullet with that bastard’s name on it.

“Hell yes, I’m up for it. Let’s go.”
