Shane’s Law #12

This time, Sheriff Ben Hayes and I only brought one deputy, but I reckoned it would be more than enough.

Blackhawk had to be out there crawling on his belly towards a hiding place, and we knew it was only him and the one accomplice who shot at us from the nearby rocks.

Sure enough, even in the dusk, we picked up on the slimy trail right where we left him. A scraped and side-winding dirt path led beyond the railroad tracks and toward the rocks.

But as we followed the rocks, they began to get larger and larger, until the land stacked together and formed solid enough to bring us to the side of a large plateau.

In the side of the huge formation we saw the trail lead into a cave. Now this was both good and bad news: Good, considering we had him pigeon-holed; Bad, considering we were currently out in the open.

Our next plan of action was to enter the cave under the dark veil of night, using stealth instead of bravado. We couldn’t give him the chance to pull a fast one on us again.

The Sheriff, deputy, and I dismounted our horses to the side of the cave opening, and a few hundred yards back. Then, we waited for nightfall.

But just as we were under the cover of darkness and edging our way toward the cave, we heard the sound of a pistol being cocked.
