The god-like weapon stood before us: a long spear radiating a golden aura, hovering above a dais in the shadowed chamber we had just stepped into.

As luck would have it though, a massive yawning chasm stretched miles below the earth, separating us from our prize.

Somehow, we had to find a way to cross this pit.

“Any brilliant ideas?” I said off-handedly to Brogah as I stroked my chin.

He was already rummaging through his supplies.

“Well, I have this,” he replied, showing me a small, but sturdy looking metal grappling hook tied to the end of a thickly woven rope.

He grinned impishly and began whirling the rope while standing at the edge of the chasm.

“Clever bastard,” I muttered, and stood back to let the ranger work.

In a flash, Brogah had caught the spikes of his grappling hook on a cluster of knobby porous stalactites and flung himself over the ledge, across the chasm, and safely on the other side with hardly a care.

When he swung the rope back to me, I wrapped my fingers taut around it, let out a short exhale, and then stepped off the ledge to attempt the same maneuver.

Evidently, I was not as dexterous as I believed, and at the end of my swing across the chasm, my midsection met the side of the opposite ledge.

The wind was knocked out of me, but more alarming was the fact that I might swing back and be stuck hanging over the pit, or lose my grip on the rope and fall to my death.

Quick-thinking Brogah, however, was there to keep the rope from going in the opposite direction, and simultaneously help pull me up and onto the ledge.
