Plant a rumor in town and tease out the thieves
As I inspected the paddock, I could immediately tell a few things:
- The wide shallow scrape of boot prints in the mud, and the tufts of fur stuck to the sides of the wooden gate, indicated that whoever moved the cattle was in a rush
- The consistent pattern of eight horseshoe prints indicated that it was a two-man job
- The prints approaching the paddock came from the West, where town lay, and advanced to the East, toward the high plains
It would be hard to figure exactly where the thieves were headed from here, since there were already loads of homesteads out this way, and the plains would obscure any further evidence of travel.
But knowing that they came from town gave me a lead, and a strategy, for moving forward with the investigation.
I would have to go to town and sow some seeds to see which ones took root.
